“WE ARE TRYING TO SURVIVE OUR TIMES SO WE MAY LIVE INTO YOURS. -JIMMY CARTER, PRESIDENT OF THE USA, 1977 August 1977. NASA launches the two Voyager probes to scan Jupiter, Saturn and other confines of the solar system before they continue exploring space for billions of years, long after the Earth would have disappeared… The astrophysicist Carl Sagan saw this unique voyage as a great opportunity to send a message. He insisted on placing a gold-covered disc onthe sides of the probes, the Golden record. A sample condensing essential information about humanity in case Voyager would encounter intelligent life forms in outer space. This portrait of the human adventure, testimony of an idealized humanity, how was it created? According to what criteria? Does it still represent us? Exploring the reflection of Carl Sagan and his team during the creation of the Golden Record, this science reality show reflects on the propensity that humans have to archive their intimacy to give meaning to their passage on Earth. Today, as for during the cold war when VOYAGER was launched, humanity fears for its survival. We know that we will lose contact with the probe between 2024 and 2025. As this event dawns, do we want to add anything to it? Do we still recognize ourselves in this disk that represents humanity for the next 5 billion years? In collaboration with the public, this show is an opportunity to enrich the content of the golden disc bequeathed by Sagan and his team. This science-reality project seeks to make visible the entanglement of human culture and technological innovation.
